The Ukrainian government’s last-minute refusal to sign an association agreement with the European Union last week caused massive pro-European and anti-government protests in the country’s capital Kiev. Demonstrations escalated over the weekend into violent clashes with the police and as there is no end in sight have plunged the country into its biggest crisis in almost a decade.
