Poor indicators in Indigenous men’s health is about land rights

Health experts say high death rates among Indigenous men is closely connected to colonisation and continuing struggle for land rights. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men experience inter-generational stress which worsens lifestyle related illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression. A national Indigenous male health convention held in Perth today, evaluated the effects of the Aboriginal past and plans to implement strategies for a healthier future.

Voices of Indigenous women health workers from Torres Strait Islands, Cape York and Northern Territory. Dr Mick Adams is the Chair of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health Convention. Professor Dennis McDermott is currently based at Flinders University, who’s expertise is in Indigenous male mental health.  Dr Ngaire Brown is the Medical Officer from the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association.
