Political killings on the rise in the Philippines
There’s been an alarming spate of political killings across the Phillipnese over the last three years. Over 40 farmers, union leaders, human rights activists, journalists and members of progressive political parties have been assassinated. Progressive political parties such as women’s groups and land rights groups have been growing in popularity in the last few years…but their success has made them targets, with the military intelligence listings many as terrorist and communist groups. The progressive political party Bayan Muna has been particularly targeted after new political parties it began won three seats in congress in last years elections Supporters of Bayan Muna say the military intelligence, an arm of the Phillipines government, is behind the assassinations.
