Political donations in the spotlight

The NSW Greens have once again called on the major political parties to reject donations from corporations. This call comes only days after it emerged that an incorporated organisation, the Queensland Environmental Consumers Organisation, had written off almost $200,000 in debt on behalf of the Queensland Greens. Some critics have suggested that the Greens accepted large donations which were not openly declared. Australia’s laissez-faire attitude to regulating private donations to political parties has provided corporations and private individuals with an opportunity to unduly influence government policy. Tristan Burt spoke with Sam Byrne from the Greens about why the Greens opposed corporate funding of political parties.
