The Supreme Court in Papua New Guinea has ruled that immunities provided to Australian police serving in Port Moresby conflict with the PNG Constitution. The 150 Australian police officers are part of the Enhanced Co-operation Programme (ECP), an Australian Aid program. PNG police have called for Australian police officers to be sent home, with some officers on a three hour stand-by to pack up and leave. The court ruling has added to already strained relations between Australia and PNG. Doctor Ron May, an Emeritus Fellow at Australia National University, spoke with The Wire’s Samantha Regione about the latest ruling – and the implications of this for the police, and the people, of PNG.
