Pitlands first land deal for SA

Negotiations have succeeded in brokering South Australia’s first pastoral indigenous land use agreement between traditional Yankunytjatjara / Antakirinya owners and the leaseholders of Todmorden cattle station. Todmorden is about 900 km North west of Adelaide between Oodnadatta and Marla, and the deal covers the entire 7000 square kilometre rangeland property. The Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement is assisting traditional owners in negotiating agreements on a further four properties – and long-term wants to gain a consent determination of Native Title on the lands. But for now, the first ILUA gives traditional owners access to the mulga scrub, red sand, saltbush and spinifex country they call home, for cultural activities. I spoke to ALRM’s Parry Agius.
