Representatives of Pacific nations are meeting in preparation for the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to be held next month. For the 300 million Indigenous people living in over 70 countries worldwide, the establishment of the UN Permanent Forum was the culmination of a decade long struggle to gain access to the international community. The Forum will advise the UN’s Economic and Social Council about Indigenous issues relating to development, culture, education, health and human rights. Today’s Regional Workshop is an arena for Indigenous peoples to voice concerns relevant to the Pacific region and report them to the UN.
