Organic farming now makes up 2 percent of farming in Australia and organic farmers are currently getting a much better deals than other farmers from the big supermarket chains as their product is in demand as the word organic becomes the new marketing buzz word. However Biological Farmers Australia’s Scott Kinnear says we lag behind European countries where organic farming already makes up 15 percent of the total and governments offer conversion subsidies to farmers who want to make the change. Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries Richard Kolbeck says the government believes in a level playing field for farmers and there are no plans to offer incentives to increase the number of organic farmers.
