The Olympic Games kicked off in Rio on Saturday. Already we’ve seen Australia take three gold, Serena and Venus Williams lose out early and French gymnast Samir Aït Saïd suffer a serious leg injury. But beyond the excitement, what are the Olympics costing the planet? For most host countries, the games involve the construction of an entirely new city with large stadiums, aquatic centres and accommodation. So are the Olympic Games innately unsustainable?
