The Gallup government in Western Australia recently floated a proposal to transport water from the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley’s to the state capital, in efforts to address growing concerns over management of the resource. The plan has been met with considerable community opposition, over a lack of consultation on the issue. Chairperson of the Nykina Association Lena Fraser Buckle says the decision to take away water is like taking away culture. State MP Carol Martin is also angry – saying the first she heard about then plan was in the media.
