NT clans fight against nuclear dump
The Athenge Lhere are a clan group of the Arrende nation living north of Alice Springs. Their traditional lands contain one of three sites proposed to house a new national nuclear waste dump in the Territory. The Athenge Lhere and indeed the whole Arrende nation have taken up the fight to stop the plan — and will now get a major boost from the support being offered to them by the successful Kunga Tjutas campaign. NT Member for MacDonnell Alison Anderson explains the concerns of traditional owners from the Mount Everard area, who staged a rally to protest against the proposed dump. Across the border, the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta fought for 6 years to block a national radioactive waste dump in the South Australian desert. Nina Brown from the Kungka Tjuta’s Iranti Wanti Campaign Office says they recently hosted a meeting with Arrente people.
