Researchers from JCU are trialling a new program in the hopes of reducing dementia rates among Torres Strait Islander people.
Previous JCU studies found the rates of dementia in the Torres Strait were three to four times higher than non-Indigenous or mainland Australians, and suggest rates of mild cognitive impairment (or MCI) in the Torres Strait are amongst the highest in the world.
With high rates of MCI seen in other First Nations communities in Australia, this model has potential to be implemented across the country.
