New study shows cigarettes kill two thirds of smokers

The first ever long-term study into smoking has revealed tobacco use reduces life expectancy by 10 years. However, Libertarians say studies like this stigmatise smokers and make the legal practice seem ‘naughty’.

The research was part of the Sax Institute’s 45 and Up Study in partnership with the Cancer Council NSW and the National Heart Foundation.It showed two thirds of current smokers’ deaths can be attributed to the practice, a much higher figure than the previously held 50 per cent.
