A new report from the Australian Law Reform Commission aims to empower citizens to protect their privacy. The report into the Privacy Act, published yesterday, makes almost 300 recommendations. Under new privacy laws people would be able to sue for invasion of privacy or hold companies responsible for sending private details overseas. The Commission found that Australia’s Privacy Law needs to be simplified and streamlined to become a more useful tool in times where technology has eroded privacy. But advocacy groups have already condemned the ALRCs report by saying it doesn’t go far enough and its sheer number of recommendations will prevent the important ones from being implemented.
