In a David and Goliath battle, the traditional owners of Muckaty Station have won the right to keep their land nuclear free. Today, the Northern Land Council withdrew their nomination to put a nuclear waste dump on the site. The shock decision came in the middle of a Federal Court challenge, and the NLC said they acted out of concern over the community divisions the proposal caused. However, Natalie Wasley, Beyond Nuclear Initiative convener, said if the NLC cared about traditional land owners they wouldn’t have kept the fight going for seven years.
