Mental Health In NSW

Of the nearly 500 mental health patients who commit suicide each year, 90% have been refused treatment or have been prematurely discharged. Despite recommendations made by the NSW Mental Health Inquiry, there still are no accurate statistics on the number of patients who are readmitted into the mental health system. Although a nation wide problem, only 1.5% of the mental health budget in NSW is used to support community groups, who provide essential care and rehabilitation to mental health sufferers. This is the lowest percentage in the country. Shefah Szetu spoke to Executive Officer for the Mental Health coordinating council, Jenna Bateman.
