Mass coral bleaching as marine heatwave hits WA reef

Australia’s coral reefs are once again under threat. This time, on the West Coast, with recent marine heat waves causing another event of mass coral bleaching.

The incident is widespread, affecting along Western Australia’s coast, from the Ningaloo Reef to the remote Rowley Shoals.  Corals that have thrived for in oceans for decades, are now turning white.

Research scientist from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Dr James Gilmour says all coral bleaching events are connected.
