Why are so many kids trapped in hot cars every summer?

Every year in Australia, over 5,000 children are rescued after being left unattended in a car (Kidsafe).

Last Saturday in Western Sydney, a dad left his kid in the car when the temperature was around 40 degrees.

 

Statistics like these are alarming, but could a situation like this ever happen to you?
