Malaysian opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has long predicted that today will be the start of a new era in Malaysian politics. For months he has threatened the ruling National Front coalition that he would entice enough of their MPs to defect to his People’s Alliance coalition to take control of government. Not that the ruling coalition has any shortage of internal turmoil. One minister has called for a leadership renewal, and another has quit the cabinet in protest over a government decision to detain a blogger, an opposition MP and a journalist without trial. The Wire asked Dato’ Sallehudin Hashim, Secretary-General of Anwar’s People’s Justice Party (PKR) if they are seizing power today.
