The Stop Ecocide Foundation is a Dutch-based NGO that has been running a campaign since 2017 to pass a law making environmental destruction a crime.
The group’s legal experts have drafted a bill, which they intend to submit to the governing body of the International Criminal Court later this year.
Whilst there are many legal challenges ahead, there’s also the broader issue of enforcement. Yet, if successful, it will add ecocide to the ICC’s jurisdictional responsibilities, alongside genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression.
