Today the final report of the Federal Government’s Australian Feral Camel Management Project was presented in Canberra. Ninti One, a national non-for-profit organisation, managed the $19 million project since 2009, culling 160,000 feral camels from the Central Australian landscape. The vast feral camel population in outback Australia is damaging vegetation, wildlife, Aboriginal cultural assets and community infrastructure. Some indigenous groups have criticised the project’s approach for not taking into account existing programs to control feral camels which are more sustainable and beneficial to local communities.
