Politicians have lost the art of selling us grand visions of the future, instead, they focus on communicating the threats that we must be protected from. In return, we in the west seem to be losing our ability to solve the problems caused by globalization and as a result are retreating further and further within our own ethnic and social groups. That’s one vision of the 21st Century being put forward by Frank Furedi, a Professor Sociology at the UK’s University of Kent who is currently in Australia for an ongoing forum by Sydney University, called Sydney Ideas 2006. Amid the pessimism of the War on Terror, tonight at Sydney University he will be posing the question “Can our faith in humanity survive the 21st century?” and pointing out ways through the quagmire. Professor Furedi discussed with The Wire why he believes our faith in humanity is currently under threat.
