Plans by the government to allow Aboriginal communities to offer 99 year leases on their lands could result in indigenous people losing out on deals with developers and losing control of how the land is sub-leased, according to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma. He says although the idea could work well for some communtiies it needs to be carefully managed especially in areas where communities control desirable coastal land.
