Law allows destruction of ‘deep time’ rock shelters in Pilbara

The Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinkura people in the Pilbara have been devastated by the destruction of two ancient and sacred rock shelters. Mining company Rio Tinto detonated explosives in the Jukaan gorge last weekend. WA heritage law, now under review, allowed the explosions to go ahead. The Greens say the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity laws need to be strengthened to protect cultural treasures.
