We think of Japan as a modern country—technologically advanced with a high standard of living and a very robust economy. But it’s also a country that values it’s heritage and culture. And sadly this can have a downside. Sometimes the push to maintain this culture results in racial discrimination. Arudu Debeto is a Japanese citizen who was born in the United States. In 1999 he was refused entry to a Japanese bath-house because it had a ‘Japanese-only’ policy and he didn’t look Japanese. Arudu Debeto is now involved in another racial discimination case.
