A recent report has revealed that intelligent youths are being let down by our school system. The report revealed that smart, motivated students are leaving year 12 without even the basic grammatical knowledge of how to construct a sentence. Kevin Donnelly, the author of ‘Why Our Schools Are Failing’ says current English curriculum is not up to standard and students simply aren’t being taught basic grammar. By contrast, the South Australian President of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English defends the current English teching system and says teaching standards are acceptable and appropriate for modern students.
