Last week, the Indonesian parliament passed a new criminal code that seriously violate international human rights law and standards.

Human Rights Watch said the new code not only violates the rights of religious minorities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, but it also undermines the rights to freedom of speech and association.

The laws have continued to be criticised over the past week, with many expecting the changes to extend formal legality to hundreds of Sharia regulations imposed by local officials in areas across the country.
