We have all seen them before – television programmes and newspapers telling us if it’s our face they’ve captured in the crowd, we can claim a prize. But should they be required to include people of every race and nationality? Neville Gollan is a Murray Bridge man from the Coorong region, who has been tracking one such competition in the Murray Valley Standard, and says that he’s hardly seen an indigenous winners. He speaks to The Wire’s Annie Hastwell about why he’s so angry. The Standard editor Travis Simmon’s defends the competition, telling Alex Parry it has not been a conscious decision to exclude indigenous people. Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commissioner Linda Mathews discusses different types of racial discrimmination, whether intended or unconscious, and says cases like this are not uncommon.
