Mining magnate Andrew Forrest has today come out signing the praises of his Australian Employment Covenant, saying that over 10 000 indigenous Australians have so far been placed into jobs, and that the solution to the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians is now at hand. He’s also taken a swipe at the government, saying that the much of the training it provides isn’t focused on what employers need. Researchers in the area have welcomed the covenant’s training push, but many say that there are no silver bullets. They say Forrest’s training push must be accompanied by work to address the more complicated underlying causes of indigenous unemployment.
