Nowhere is the shortage of health care workers more acute than in the area of Indigenous health. In Queensland, where Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders make up 3.6 per cent of the population, less than 2 per cent of the State’s health workers are Indigenous. Queensland Health’s Workplace Planning director, Glynis Schultz, says ideally these figures should be the same. Balancing numbers by getting more Indigenous health workers on the ground is just the start.
