Indigenous control brings health gains in Canada
As preparations for Sorry Day get underway, the committee has announced plans to promote the event as a National Day of Healing for all Australians. Organisers are bringing the executive director of Canada’s Aboriginal Healing Foundation, Mike DeGagne, to speak at the Parliament House launch in May. Mr DeGagne says there has been a metamorphosis in Canadian Indigenous health care over the last three decades, with changing expectations that have seen more young people completing tertiary education to qualify as health professionals. He says along with the beginnings of the land claims process, there has been a lot of success with Canadian Aboriginals gaining a significant measure of control over how systems are planned, what their health needs are and the delivery of health services.
