If you’re indigenous and you get leukaemia the ten million possible bone marrow matches on the international registry are unlikely to be of any use. Neither are most of those on the Australian register. Jo Bayley from the Red Cross has worked for several years on strategies to get more Aboriginal people to agree to be tissue typed and to donate after she was involved in a distressing and ultimately hopeless search for donors for two children with leukaemia a few years ago.
