Independence Day for Yindjibarndi

Yindjibarndi people in the Pilbara community of Ngurawaana have been celebrating, because today they became only the second Indigenous West Australian group to have their land title handed to them by the Aboriginal Lands Trust. Trust Chairman “Doc” Reynolds travelled to the Pilbara for the ceremony, which represents the fruit of many years of hard work by elder Mr Woodley King and the community. Traditional Owner Len Norman says the land title handover is an important day for the Yindjibarndi. Ngurranwaana Community Chairman Ricky Smith says they are also celebrating the opening of their own school today – which will mean local children don’t have to travel long distances for an education.
