Improving indigenous prison stats: It’s about more than policing


Almost thirty years after the recommendations of the Royal Commission into deaths in custody the figures tell a worse tale than ever, with more than 26% of prisoners indigenous and well over 400 deaths in custody. When looking for solutions, changing police attitudes t is just the tip of the iceberg says Professor Tom Calma, patron of Gayaa Dhuwi , national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide prevention leadership body. He says the rallies on the weekend are a sign that all Australians are waking up to the need for change.
