The changes to the governments immigration detention policies, reported on the Wire last night, have been welcomed by Australia’s longest serving detainee Peter Qasim. Detained in Baxter Detention centre in South Australia, Mr Qasim recieved the news that he may be available for a bridging visa from his bed in Adelaide’s Glenside hospital. However while the bridging visa is a signifcant step for the long-term detainee, there are conflicting reports as to his treatment by the Australian authorities and to the effectiveness of the new bridging visa. Charles Gregory reports.
