Hundreds of kids in detention after Government deadline passes

Protesters on the weekend have demanded the closure of the Broadmeadows immigration detention centre which houses teenage asylum seekers. The Immigration Minister Chris Bowen promised late last year that the vast majority of unaccompanied children would be released by the end of June this year. But that deadline has now passed, but according to his department, there are still 340 such children in detention. Doctors and refugee advocates say the current situation is unacceptable.
