The withdrawal of 550 Australian troops from Iraq fulfils an election promise by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to bring the Troops home this year. Even so, around 1,000 troops remain in and around Iraq securing oil supply lines, protecting coalition HQ, and guarding the Australian embassy. While the mainstream press have lauded Australian troops for their humanitarian aid, the general public have often been skeptical of Australia’s involvement in the Middle Eastern conflict. So how will Australian troops deployed to Iraq be remembered?
