Terrorism and illegal immigration have the headlines where border protection is concerned. But a recently released report from the Australian Institute of Criminology has refocused on a proportionally small and much subordinated group who slip through the net. Human traffic has increased the world over – but offenders are notoriously difficult to prosecute and victims are rarely willing providers of information. In Australia, most human traffic consists of women taken from neighboring Asian/ pacific countries and exploited in the local sex industry. The sex trade has recently been under fire in NSW – where sex workers claim harsher crackdowns will fuel corruption… Now, adult industry associations say trafficking only exists because the government refuses to provide sex workers with a legitimate working visa.
