Nigerians have elected former leader Muhammadu Buhari as their new president. Formerly a military dictator – he ruled the country from 1983 to 1985 – before being deposed in a military coup. After 16 years of the People’s Democratic Party in power, Nigerians desired change. Dissatisfied with the leadership of Goodluck Johnathan, the public were frustrated with his management of the Boko Haram insurgency, political corruption and an economy plagued with endemic poverty.
