The high proportion of prisoners infected with hepatitis C has raised the question of why Australia doesn’t have needle exchange facilities offered in jails. The first ever study conducted in South Australia reveals the blood born virus is one of the most commonly notified diseases in the State.Shooting galleries in prisons have in the past been a taboo subject. Now, organisations such as the Hepatitus C Council of SA have called on State and Federal Governments to open up discussion about prisoner’s right to health and safety.Justina Legoe spoke with Lisa Miller, researcher at Adelaide University.
