Today, Federal Court judge Justice Jeffrey Spender overturned the decision by Federal immigration minister, Kevin Andrews to revoke the visa of Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef. Haneef was questioned by the Australian Federal Police in July and held for two weeks without charge in relation to terrorist attacks in United Kingdom that involved two of his second cousins. The Minister was accused of political interference because the decision to revoke Haneef’s visa came on the same day that a Queensland judge granted Dr Haneef bail. The Director of Public Prosecutions has subsequently dropped all charges against Dr Haneef and one of Dr Haneef’s barristers, Stephen Keim, discussed the implications.
