This weekend Maori man Holden Stirling used Facebook to set up a performance of the Haka at Waikanae Beach in support of the Native American Sioux tribe at Standing Rock. More than a hundred Maori men and women joined in to show solidarity with the first peoples across the globe.

As the Sioux Tribe continue to fight for their land against an oil pipeline that threatens to disturb sacred burial grounds and contaminate their water source; activists and supporters are taking to social media to help.

Last week more than a million people used Facebook to ‘check in’ their location at Standing Rock to show support and solidarity. Stirling believes the use of social media to communicate, plan, and execute shows of solidarity like the recent performance of the Haka is hugely beneficial to the Indigenous community.
