Continuing with Anzac day, Australians are well known for their participation in conflicts around the world as armed service men and women but gaining less of a profile is the role of peacekeepers and peacemakers. But here’s a little known fact, four Australians were involved in the first UN peacekeeping mission ever undertaken. Since then, Australians have served on just about every continent except their own in peacekeeping mission around the world. Tomorrow, the Australian Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Veterans Association will be marching many capital cities. Ahead of the march, The Wire spoke with Peter Matthey, the head of the NSW branch to find out more about Australia’s proud tradition of peace.
