Phil Cleary’s sister’s murder on 1987 has made him a lifetime campaigner against violence against women and in particular against the defence of provocation which many men use to have a murder charge reduced to manslaughter. His latest book deals with the killing of Melbourne woman Julie Ramage. She died at the hands of her husband James who pleaded provocation and received a verdict of manslaughter.
