Indonesia’s human rights track record has long been questionable. Now a team of Australian researchers are accusing the Indonesian military of committing systematic genocide in the province of Papua. The report “Genocide in West Papua?” was released by The University of Sydney’s Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies yesterday detailing eyewitness accounts of Indonesian military involvement in rape, arson and torture in the province. Andrea Johansen spoke to the centre’s director, professor Stuart Rees and Democrats’ Foreign Affairs spokesperson Senator Natasha Stott Despoja about the issue.
