The youngest employment segment, 15-19 year-olds, is now disturbingly also a major long-term unemployed segment (joining the over 50’s) in a new well-being Index for Australia. What is going wrong? In the past interest rate cuts would have helped stimulate employment growth but there appears to have been no result. There is a growing number of economists who think it is time to ditch the surplus mantra – but who will convince the major parties?
