Frustrated doctors and scientists question the sacred cows of economics

Hundreds of Australian doctors and scientists have co-signed a letter calling into question some of the sacred cows of orthodox economics. The letter sent to the Australian Medical Journal was signed by a number of high-profile members of the medical profession, including ex AMA president Kerryn Phelps. The doctors and scientists say an economy based on excess consumption is continually undermining their work and encouraging unhealthy lifestyles. The letter also contends that behind rising obesity rates and rising carbon emissions is a common root cause: an economy based on excess consumption and endless economic growth.
