Rodney Cocks is one of those people who always seems to manage to be not quite in the wrong place at the wrong time, but dangerously close. The young UN officer and Duntroon graduate has written a book about his adventures with terror – it’s also a story of the realities of the humanitarian work behind the scenes in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. The book’s called ‘Bali to Baghdad and Beyond.’ Rodney was in Paddy’s Bar on the night of the Bali Bombings, but had just ducked out to an internet cafe to check his email. He was able to help in the horrific aftermath. Ten months later, he was working in the UN Headquarters in Baghdad when it was hit by a massive blast. He spoke with The Wire’s Annie Hastwell.
