The latest news of misconduct and sexual assault allegations involving a footballer with the Newcastle Knights has catapulted the issue of rape and sport back into the spotlight. Now football fans, disgusted by the off-field behaviour of some players, have released a proposal, which aims to develop strategies to stop incidents of sexual assault by footballers. The group, Football Fans Against Sexual Assault – started by Sydney Swans fan Kath Haines her partner and another friend – recently presented the proposals to football executives in a bid to gain more fan involvement in a problem that has literally been turning fans off the game. The 50-page submission was based on the collective views of 1000 fans who are keen to disassociate themselves with any behaviour that degrades women. Kath Haines, Co-founder of Footballers Against Sexual Assault, spoke earlier about some to the many proposals outlined in the submission.
