Fiji trade union “not at all optimistic” of return to democracy

A peak Fijian union body met with the Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr today, saying is not at all optimistic about the pacific country’s planned return to democracy. The Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) was scheduled to meet with Mr Carr this afternoon, to discuss the Fiji military regime’s plans for a new constitution and democratic elections in 2014. But speaking ahead of the meeting, FTUC’s National Secretary Felix Anthony said Mr Carr should be wary when assessing signs of progress. Mr Carr has said he is “cautiously optimistic” about the planned election.
